Von der Leyen receives internal backlash for choosing business envoy – POLITICO

Recently, the selection of Pieper for the position of SME envoy has sparked controversy, prompting a request for a discussion at the upcoming College meeting. The four commissioners involved in the process are all rivals of von der Leyen’s European People’s Party, setting the stage for political tensions in the lead-up to the European election in June.

Two other women, both shortlisted candidates for the SME envoy position, were found to have scored higher than Pieper during the selection process. One of these candidates, Czech Renew lawmaker Martina Dlabajová, confirmed that she had lodged an official complaint about the procedure. In response to the concerns raised, a group of lawmakers from various political parties submitted written questions to the Commission seeking clarification on how Pieper was chosen and what additional qualifications he had.

Despite these inquiries, no response has been provided by the Commission. Green lawmaker Daniel Freund of Germany and his colleagues are still awaiting an explanation. This situation has raised further questions about the selection process and whether it was fair or transparent.

The four commissioners involved in Pieper’s selection are all rivals of von der Leyen’s European People’s Party, which could set up political tensions leading up to the European election in June.

Breton and Schmit have already made public remarks about their boss von der Leyen. It remains to be seen how this will affect their relationship with Pieper as he takes up his new role as SME envoy.
