The development of a new robot pill, called PillBot, could soon replace the invasive medical procedure of endoscopy for many people. Created by American company Endiatx, the device has gone through 50 versions before reaching its current size as a pill and is now entering clinical trials.
To reach this stage, the company obtained $7 million in funding and the creator, Torrey Smith, has tested the prototype up to 43 times. PillBot is currently in phase 3 of clinical trials with the goal of making gastroenterology diagnoses more accessible, convenient, and cost-effective. It is expected to be available for sale in 2026.
The multi-pump propulsion system allows PillBot to move in different directions by emitting harmless fluid jets. It also features a camera that transmits high-resolution video and LED lights, allowing doctors to follow the transmission wirelessly. The device can take advantage of the body’s natural movements to enter the digestive system and is equipped with artificial intelligence to maneuver autonomously.
If successful, PillBot could provide an early and effective detection method for various gastrointestinal conditions. This innovative approach to medical testing may offer a less invasive and more comfortable option for patients in the future.
