Sources say AAC considering Tim Pernetti, sports executive, for next commissioner

The American Athletic Conference (AAC) is in search of a new commissioner and sources have revealed that they are targeting Tim Pernetti for the role. Pernetti, who currently serves as the president of IMG Academy, has a wealth of experience in the college sports industry.

With his strong background in television, Pernetti has a unique set of skills that make him a promising candidate for the commissioner role. He began his career at CSTV, the former College Sports Television Network, and has also worked for ABC Sports and ABC Enhanced TV. Despite a controversial departure from Rutgers following the Mike Rice scandal, Pernetti has quickly reemerged as a prominent executive in the college sports industry.

The trend of non-traditional hires in the commissioner space is evident with the likes of Brett Yormark of the Big 12 and Jim Phillips of the ACC. With his diverse background in television, college sports, and on-campus experiences, Pernetti’s qualifications make him well-suited for the role of AAC Commissioner.

In recent years, the AAC has undergone significant changes with the addition of Rice, UTSA, North Texas, FAU, UAB, and Charlotte to the conference. The league currently has a television contract with ESPN that extends through the 2031-32 academic year. As such, it will be important for any new commissioner to have experience managing high-profile searches and negotiating media deals.
