Argentine groups condemn the termination of scientific workers

In an effort to protest against the termination of labor contracts and budget cuts within the National Agency for the Promotion of Research, Technological Development, and Innovation, its members have come together under the motto “Reincorporation now. Everyone here is needed!” Additionally, they are expressing their opposition to the cuts made by the Government of Javier Milei in the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET).

Recently, over 60 Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry, Economics, Medicine, and Physics have written a letter to President Milei expressing their concerns regarding the potential impact of his measures on Argentina. The scientists from various nations warned that the scientific sectors in Argentina are dangerously close to a precipice, which could have negative effects on not only the country but also on the world as a whole.

The letter emphasizes that it is crucial that Argentina invests more in research programs rather than reducing budgets for CONICET and National Universities. This devaluation of citizens and future prospects hinders progress, innovation, education opportunities for its population. Furthermore, freezing research projects and reducing student numbers could lead to collapse of a system that has been built up over years. Milei has stated that over 50,000 national public administration workers have already been laid off with an additional 70,000 contracts not set to be renewed.

The concerns raised by these Nobel Prize winners highlight how important it is to prioritize investment in science and technology for economic and social progress in any nation.
