Company president says Nintendo will not utilize generative artificial intelligence for game development

In a departure from the growing trend in the video game industry, Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furakawa, has announced that the company will not be using generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology for its projects. This decision was made during a meeting with investors, where Furakawa acknowledged the benefits of this technology but also highlighted potential copyright issues that could arise.

Furakawa emphasized that while generative AI may offer increased creativity, Nintendo has concerns about intellectual property rights. He noted that Nintendo has a long history of creating video games and wants the value their company brings to be unique and not solely reliant on technology.

In recent years, many companies in the video game industry have been adopting generative AI technology, with Electronic Arts, Take-Two, and Ubisoft among those actively incorporating it into their games. This technology has been used to enhance gameplay and expedite development processes, ultimately reducing costs for these companies.

However, Nintendo has chosen to focus on their own experience and creativity in game development rather than relying solely on technology. By making this decision, Nintendo is setting itself apart from the rest of the industry and reinforcing its commitment to creating unique and innovative gaming experiences.
