New UN Resolution Emphasizes Human Well-being in AI Development and Cooperation

A resolution to strengthen international cooperation in developing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities has been adopted unanimously by the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Proposed by China and co-sponsored by over 140 countries, the measure underscores the importance of adhering to principles that prioritize human well-being, promote beneficial intelligence, and benefit humanity.

The resolution encourages countries, particularly developing ones, to engage in international cooperation and take practical actions to enhance their AI capabilities. It aims to expand their representation and voice in the global governance of AI, defend an open, fair, and non-discriminatory business environment, and support the United Nations in its central role in fostering international cooperation on this technology.

By creating a framework for countries to collaborate on AI development while ensuring ethical principles and human rights are respected, the resolution seeks to harness the potential of this technology for the greater good of humanity while safeguarding against potential risks and challenges associated with its development and deployment.
