New Science Projects Director Brings Decades of Experience and Fresh Perspective to Alaska Seafood Cooperative

Sarah Webster has been appointed as the new science projects director for the Alaska Seafood Cooperative (AKSC), taking over from John Gauvin, who held the position for nearly 30 years. Gauvin will be retiring from the role but will continue to work on some of the science projects already in progress for the cooperative.

Webster brings with her a wealth of experience in Alaska fisheries science, having previously worked as a fisheries scientist for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, focusing on recreational groundfish research in the charter fishing sector. She also managed the research program for Alaska Pacific University’s Fisheries, Aquatic Science, and Technology Program, where she supported projects across a range of industries.

As a former member of the International Pacific Halibut Commission’s Management Strategy Advisory Board, Webster has worked directly with halibut longliners to develop and implement management strategies aimed at conserving halibut populations. In her new role at AKSC, she will collaborate with fishery scientists from NOAA and other institutions to conduct research aimed at modifying fishing practices and gear to help members reduce bycatch and minimize the impact of fishing on marine habitats.
