As concerns over the increasing cases of bird flu continue to rise, the USDA has recently implemented new restrictions on dairy cattle in eight states. This move comes as a result of the detection of the virus in milk samples, raising issues about food safety.
At a press conference, Bernadette Albanese, the Medical Director of El Paso County Public Health, expressed her concerns about the impact of the virus on public health. She emphasized that immediate action is needed to safeguard consumer health and protect the food supply.
To this end, the USDA has put in place new testing requirements for cows before they cross state lines. For herds that test positive for Influenza A virus, including bird flu, owners must provide epidemiological information such as animal movement tracking. The USDA stated that these measures are necessary to prevent further spread of the virus and ensure public safety.
Local residents like Jaden Knowles are also concerned about the potential effects of bird flu on public health. Knowles mentioned that the contagious nature of bird flu is especially concerning among children and hopes that companies will take necessary steps to safeguard consumer health.
