Sean Mooney Selected to Lead Center for Information Technology at NIH

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has appointed Sean Mooney as the director of its Center for Information Technology (CIT). His tenure will begin in mid-March. NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli expressed her confidence in Dr. Mooney’s ability to lead CIT, citing his expertise in bioinformatics and experience in overseeing multi-faceted research IT departments.

Dr. Mooney will oversee a $400 million portfolio focused on the use of supercomputers in medical research data analysis. The CIT collaborates with the NIH intramural community in computational bioscience, engineering, informatics, and statistics to facilitate biomedical discoveries that advance the nation’s health. In addition, the CIT provides IT infrastructure and services to support all of NIH’s operations.

Prior to his appointment at NIH, Dr. Mooney taught biomedical informatics at the University of Washington School of Medicine and served as the chief research information officer at the UW Institute for Medical Data Science. He also holds the position of interim director for the UW Institute for Medical Data Science and directs informatics for the UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences.

NIH Director Bertagnolli expressed her anticipation in welcoming Dr. Mooney to the NIH leadership team and extended appreciation to Ivor D’Souza, who is currently serving as acting director of CIT. This appointment follows the retirement of former director Andrea Norris in September 2022.
