New German Veterans Day Honors the Sacrifices of Soldiers and Calls for Improved Support Systems

Germany has recently established a National Veterans Day to be observed on June 15th each year. This decision was supported by a large majority of members of the Bundestag, including the governing parties SPD, Greens, and FDP, as well as the opposition Union. The aim is to show appreciation for the service of active and former soldiers of the Bundeswehr. The Left group abstained from voting.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius highlighted the importance of Veterans Day as a long-overdue recognition of those who make great sacrifices for their country. He emphasized on various operations and missions carried out by soldiers, such as those in Afghanistan, protecting merchant shipping, evacuations from crisis areas, and assistance during natural disasters like forest fires or the COVID-19 pandemic.

Germany has chosen to define veterans in the broadest possible terms, encompassing almost every active or former soldier within the Bundeswehr. This inclusive definition aims to avoid disputes over who qualifies as a veteran and recognizes diverse experiences and needs of those who have served their country.

Ongoing discussions about support provided to veterans after their service have led to calls for improved care and social appreciation. In response to these concerns, a veterans office was established in Berlin as a central point of contact for former soldiers. Efforts are being made to enhance support services for veterans and create a national day that serves as a platform for recognition, gratitude, and exchange between veterans, their families, the Bundeswehr, society, and politics.

While there may be ongoing discussions about exact definition and support systems for veterans in Germany, recognition of their service and sacrifices remains a priority for German government and society at large. With official introduction and commemoration each year through Veterans Day efforts are being made to ensure that all veterans receive appreciation
