Patriots and Jahlani Tavai sign three-year contract extension

The New England Patriots have extended the contract of linebacker Jahlani Tavai, locking in another key player for the team. According to ESPN, the deal is worth a base value of $15 million and can escalate to $21 million. Tavai, 27, was set to enter the final season of a two-year extension he signed in November 2022.

Originally a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2019, Tavai was cut from their roster at the start of the 2021 regular season. He then signed with the Patriots’ practice squad and has remained with the team since then. Tavai had a standout season in 2023, recording 110 total tackles, five tackles for loss, four QB hits, one sack, and two interceptions.

This offseason, the Patriots have been actively re-signing players with expiring contracts. Tavai is the latest to commit to a new deal, following in the footsteps of running back Rhamondre Stevenson, defensive tackle Christian Barmore, and center David Andrews. The team is solidifying its roster for the future, ensuring key players remain in New England.
