Bexar County commissioners have approved a $5 million investment into the construction of a new sports facility at UTSA that will be accessible to residents. The facility, known as the “Roadrunner NEST,” which stands for “Nurturing Elite Sports Talent,” will be built on the main campus starting in January 2025. With a total cost of $35 million, the facility is expected to be completed by December 2026, with the City of San Antonio also investing an equal amount.
The Roadrunner NEST is expected to be a hub for sports and athletics in the area, with about half of UTSA’s students coming from Bexar County. The facility will be available for public use, hosting competitive events and youth sports, in addition to serving as the home for men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams at the university. UTSA has committed to covering the facility’s annual operating costs of $500,000 once it is completed.
County Commissioner Grant Moody emphasized that the Roadrunner NEST will not only benefit UTSA but will be a valuable asset for the entire community. He stated that “the facility will provide opportunities for community members to engage in sports and recreation activities.” The joint investment by the county and city reflects a commitment to providing opportunities for residents to participate in sports and recreation activities.
The Roadrunner NEST is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Bexar County, with an estimated 140 full-time jobs being created during construction. Once completed, it is expected to generate millions of dollars in revenue each year through ticket sales, merchandise sales, and sponsorships. This investment in sports facilities reflects a growing interest in promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles among residents.
