Montgomery small business owners enlightened by legal panel on newest retail theft law

Business enterprise owners in Montgomery, Alabama are taking action against crime following the implementation of a new retail theft law on September 1st. This law states that people who steal merchandise valued involving $500 and $two,500 can be charged with second-degree theft, a Class C felony. These who steal merchandise valued at about $two,500 or additional can face initial-degree theft charges, a Class B felony. To educate neighborhood retailers about the new law, Montgomery County Circuit Judge Johnny Hardwick, District Lawyer Daryl Bailey, and Alabama District Attorney’s Association Executive Director Barry Matson brought them collectively at the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce.

Bailey acknowledged that a lot of organizations, each huge box retailers and mom-and-pop shops, have been negatively impacted financially. He highlighted that the new law will now impose jail time and restitution on these convicted of theft and these accountable for organizing such crimes. In order to avoid theft in retailers, Bailey and Hardwick suggested that small business owners invest in up-to-date surveillance cameras and employ loss prevention officers.
