Monks trekking from Florida to Niagara Falls to spread message of world peace arrive in WNY

A small group of Buddhist monks are currently on a 2,000-mile journey from Key West, Florida to Niagara Falls in Western New York. Their purpose is to spread awareness about achieving world peace. The walk began on March 31, with monks from different parts of the world walking an average of 30 miles per day.

On Monday, the group traveled through the Southern Tier on Route 5 and Route 20 before reaching Grand Island and Terrapin Point. During their journey, they have stopped at various locations, including the Native Pride Travel Plaza where they received a Seneca Nation flag and refreshments.

The monks are traveling light with minimal clothing, blankets, and food and rely on the kindness of local communities to support them on their pilgrimage. This week, they will continue their journey and plan to end it at the observation deck at Terrapin Point on Saturday. Updates about their journey and location can be found on their Facebook page.
