In earlier this year, Meta introduced the “Made with AI” labels following a review of its policy by the US Internet Regulatory Board. However, it was discovered that authentic photos were mistakenly labeled as AI-generated, leading to confusion among photographers. Meta found that the labeling was triggered by images that had been retouched or polished using AI tools in various software.
Photographers like former White House photographer Pete Souza raised concerns about how their authentic photos were being labeled as AI-generated. They suspected that graphic processing in software like Adobe’s Photoshop could have triggered Meta’s algorithm to add the tag without their consent.
Meta responded to these complaints by correcting the label to be added to images identified as made with artificial intelligence. The new label, AI info, will allow users to click for more information about why the label was added. This change aims to provide transparency and clarity for users.
