Ukraine is on the brink of becoming a member of the European Union (EU). In the upcoming fall, EU countries will discuss whether to begin negotiations with Ukraine to start the membership process. MEP Henna Virkkunen provides insight into what this means for both Ukraine and the EU.
According to Virkkunen, the decision to initiate membership negotiations requires unanimous approval from all EU countries. If approved, the negotiation process can take several years. The standards for Ukraine’s potential EU membership should be kept high, in Virkkunen’s opinion.
