Meloni Defends Civil Rights Record at G7 Summit: Italy’s Abortion and LGBTQ+ Rights

Following the conclusion of the G7 summit in Borgo Egnazia, Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed concerns over potential regression in civil rights under her leadership. Meloni emphasized that her government has not taken any steps backward in terms of issues such as the right to abortion or LGBT rights. This came in response to criticisms regarding the absence of references to the right to abortion in the final summit declaration, sparking debate among world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron.

Italy has a long-standing history of contentious issues surrounding civil rights, with abortion being a particularly divisive topic. In 1978, a law was passed allowing for abortion within the first 90 days of pregnancy. However, access to these services is often hindered by Catholic doctors who refuse to perform the procedure. Despite this, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that she does not intend to change the existing law on abortion and instead wants to explore alternative options.

In contrast, thousands of individuals gathered in Rome for the Gay Pride Parade, advocating for equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community. Despite this setback, Italian courts have granted adoptions to children of civil partners in certain cases, indicating progress towards greater recognition of LGBTQ+ families in Italy.
