The ban has been in place since 1943, with the last time residents were able to use fireworks for personal displays being during World War II.

Delaware now allows ground-based fireworks and handheld sparklers on July 4th and New Year’s Eve, while New Jersey permits handheld sparklers and novelty items for those 16 and older. However, Massachusetts officials continue to enforce the ban on fireworks, urging residents to leave them to the professionals. Anyone caught with illegal fireworks may face fines, with police required to confiscate them.

Fire departments in Massachusetts have reported numerous fires, burns, and injuries related to illegal fireworks. Between 2013 and 2022, over 1,000 fires and 200 injuries occurred due to illegal fireworks use. In 2022 alone, there were 106 fires, 38 injuries, and over $400,000 in damages attributed to fireworks use.
