Residents of Massachusetts have not been able to set off their own fireworks since World War II.

Massachusetts is the only state in the U.S. that has a complete ban on consumer fireworks, including sparklers and firecrackers. Citizens are unable to possess, sell, or use them. The ban has been in place since 1943, with the last time residents were able to use fireworks for personal displays being during World War II.

In recent years, other states have relaxed restrictions on fireworks. Delaware now allows ground-based fireworks and handheld sparklers on July 4th and New Year’s Eve, while New Jersey permits handheld sparklers and novelty items for those 16 and older. However, Massachusetts officials continue to enforce the ban on fireworks, urging residents to leave them to the professionals. Anyone caught with illegal fireworks may face fines, with police required to confiscate them.

Fire departments in Massachusetts have reported numerous fires, burns, and injuries related to illegal fireworks. Between 2013 and 2022, over 1,000 fires and 200 injuries occurred due to illegal fireworks use. In 2022 alone, there were 106 fires, 38 injuries, and over $400,000 in damages attributed to fireworks use.

The Department of Fire Services and State Police have emphasized the dangers of illegal fireworks during peak usage times like July 4th weekends. To promote safety and prevent accidents caused by illegal use of consumer fireworks
