Indonesia urges Taliban to include women in building an inclusive economy – Middle East and Africa

Amidst two days of talks in Doha, the Taliban praised the international community’s “spirit of cooperation.” However, with Afghanistan entering its third year under the Islamist group’s rule, Indonesia remains steadfast in advocating for a more inclusive economy – specifically with regards to women’s rights.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi emphasized the importance of developing an inclusive private sector in Afghanistan for the country’s future. Indonesia expressed its willingness to connect female entrepreneurs from its own country with those in Afghanistan to support this goal.

Diplomats from over two dozen countries gathered for the third Meeting of Special Envoys on Afghanistan in a recent international meeting, despite the absence of Afghan women at the Taliban’s request. Discussions focused on the country’s economy, private sector, and solutions to narcotics-related issues.

The Afghan economy has been struggling for nearly three years due to international sanctions against the Taliban and frozen funds. This period has seen high unemployment rates, declining GDP, and price deflation. According to data from the World Bank, small and women-owned businesses are particularly vulnerable within Afghanistan’ private sector, facing a high risk of closure.

As the Taliban continues to impose strict limitations on female participation in social, political, and economic activities, there is an urgent need for more inclusive policies and support for women in Afghanistan. This will be crucial in rebuilding the country’s economy and ensuring sustainable growth in the future.
