As a lioness and her cubs were feasting on a meal in a tree, a group of hungry hyenas appeared and surrounded the tree, hoping to snatch some leftovers. One of the cubs, startled by the commotion, jumped down from the tree in an attempt to flee the scene. However, it was instantly surrounded by the hyenas and their menacing jaws.
“The cub was terrified; it froze,” Benji Solms, a guide at Serondella Game Lodge in Kruger National Park in South Africa, told LatestSightings.com. “The whooping sounds of the hyenas, coupled with their terrifying appearance, made him tremble in his skin. He realized that he had made a grave mistake.”
The mother lion recognized the danger posed by the hyenas and quickly dropped the impala carcass from the tree, landing on the ground to confront them head-on.
“She gave them a stare of death and stood firm,” Solms said. “It worked; they turned their attention from the helpless cub to the meat in front of them.”
The hyenas scurried away to feed on the carcass, leaving the cub safe thanks to its mother’s bravery and sacrifice. The story originally appeared on For The Win.
