The Libyan House of Representatives is set to hold simultaneous presidential and legislative elections before the end of the year, according to Aguila Saleh, the Speaker of the House. Saleh made this announcement while attending the Arab Parliament meetings in Cairo, and emphasized that Libya is ready for this important step.
Saleh called on the international community to provide support and encouragement for the upcoming elections, highlighting the importance of international support in ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process in Libya. He explained that necessary laws and regulations have already been issued, and the Election Commission is prepared for the process.
However, Saleh also expressed concerns about individuals who are reluctant to relinquish power in Libya. He stated that discussions have been held with the State Council to establish an agreement on forming a new government. The proposed mechanism involves recommendations by 20 members of the State Council and 10 members of the House of Representatives, who would then advance to a final selection process in the House of Representatives.
Overall, Saleh’s announcement reflects a significant development in Libya’s ongoing political transition, and signals a commitment to democratic principles and peaceful governance in the country.
