Legendary Methodist Bishop Frederick Calhoun James Passes Away at 102: A Life of Community Building and Education.

Frederick Calhoun James, a South Carolina native and the oldest Methodist bishop in the world, passed away at the age of 102. His death was announced by the Seventh Episcopal District of the AME Church on April 24.

Born on April 7, 1922, in Prosperity, James held various positions within the AME Church throughout his life. In 1960, he served as director of Social Action and had a close relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Later, he was elected as the 93rd bishop in the AME Church and assigned to Southern Africa, where he established schools, a publishing house, churches, and centers for economic empowerment.

In 1976, James moved to Arkansas and Oklahoma where he focused on youth development and restoring accreditation for Shorter College. He also played a key role in urban housing initiatives and developed a strong connection with former president Bill Clinton. Returning to South Carolina in 1984, James served as presiding bishop and chair of the board of trustees of Allen University, his alma mater. During his tenure at Allen University, he helped achieve accreditation and acquired the James Shopping Center while also serving as an ecumenical officer for the AME Church globally and overseeing the Second Episcopal District.
