Klay Thompson’s decision to depart from the Warriors was made “weeks ago,” according to NBC Sports Bay Area & California

The decision of Klay Thompson to leave the Warriors seemed to become easier in recent weeks, despite moments of soul-searching. Before signing a reported three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, Thompson considered other options such as the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Philadelphia 76ers.

According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, the fact that the Warriors were not heavily involved in early negotiations with Thompson made his decision to leave much easier. Despite plans to eventually make a competitive offer to him, Thompson did not seem willing to wait around and joined the Mavericks instead.

Thompson will now team up with Luka Dončić, Kyrie Irving, and the Mavericks in the Western Conference. Despite rumors that he might have stayed with his hometown team, it was ultimately decided that it was time for him to move on from his NBA career.
