Jonathan Kuminga delivered a single of the finest performances of his 135-game NBA profession Saturday in Memphis, and it wasn’t sufficient to retain the Warriors from consuming a 14-point loss. They have been fairly unbothered.
The Warriors didn’t embrace defeat, but Kuminga’s overall performance permitted them to superior digest the outcome. They seemed to fully grasp that this was a evening on which what they saw was much more critical than what they got.
The Warriors got the L, deservedly so, but they also got a glimpse of Kuminga playing as they hope he does for the subsequent ten seasons. The extended view in some cases matters most.
“JK played each ends, knocked down his threes, rebounded properly,” coach Steve Kerr told reporters at FedExForum following the 133-119 loss to the Grizzlies. “That was the largest point. That is the point that we’re hunting for all the time.”
Kuminga’s raw numbers have been impressive: group-higher 24 points, eight-of-16 shooting, which includes four of 7 from deep, group-higher-tying eight rebounds, 3 assists, a single steal and a single block. All in all, 30 productive minutes.
But it was the way Kuminga approached his perform that was most impressive. He exhibited a stunning blend of savagery and prudence. The young forward avoided possession-killing forced shots and, with a single exception, the silly foul. He was patient, launching when he really should have, attacking when that was the correct move and defending superior than most of his teammates.
This was about as “veteran” as Kuminga, all of 20 years old and in his second NBA season, has ever looked.
“His improvement has been good,” Draymond Green stated. “He’s correct exactly where you would hope a guy would be at this point in his profession, continuing to develop and obtaining superior at it, understanding much more, becoming much more and much more trusted. That is all you can ask for. As far as self-assurance, you just got to remain the course.”
With Andrew Wiggins on leave of absence and Andre Iguodala out with a fractured left wrist, Kuminga is the most intriguing wing on the active roster. Klay Thompson commonly brings offense, but his defense has been exploited. Anthony Lamb has subtle craftiness but can only dream of Kuminga’s athleticism. Moses Moody is on the fringe of the rotation.
Kuminga is a presence at each ends, as eager to engage the most unsafe scorer as he is to soar in for the rim-bending dunk.
“The largest point is just competing on each ends of the floor and becoming decisive,” Stephen Curry stated. “Offensively, the way they have been defending us … he had very good appears. And there was no sort of second-guessing the shots he was taking, which is good for the reason that you have got to make them spend for the way they sort of shade you on the rest of the side of the court. He has to be aggressive for the reason that when he’s out there, specifically with specific lineups, he’s going to get these shots.
“You have to be assertive and decisive, and he did that definitely properly, specifically early, and gave us a lot of life and power.”
But a single of Kuminga’s most memorable moments is completely appropriate for a “Shaqtin’ a Fool” reel. Swiping a Desmond Bane pass late in the third quarter, Kuminga, visualizing a breakaway jam, sped toward the rim, took flight and … lost the ball out of bounds. Turnover, Warriors.
“Everybody tends to make blunders,” Green reminded. “He bobbled the a single on the rapid break, and you come down and you bobble a couple plays there. Who cares? Every person bobbles the ball.
“Emotionally, that is generally a distinctive hurdle to get more than than necessarily playing on the court. It commonly requires you a tiny longer to develop emotionally than it does from a talent viewpoint. You count on him to retain increasing there, and I know he will.”

Though the Warriors have been falling back to .500 (36-36) and dropping to No. 7 in the Western Conference, Kuminga was reminding every person of what he can grow to be.
On a late-season evening when the stakes are higher and most of Golden State’s veterans have been feeling the effects of playing the preceding evening in Atlanta, the impetuous tyro dropped a comprehensive overall performance.
It wasn’t sufficient to win the game. It was precisely sufficient to shine a light toward Kuminga’s future, as properly as that of the Warriors.
