John James Wertz, a 55-year-old resident of Altoona, unexpectedly passed away on Thursday. Born in Altoona, he was the son of the late William B. Sr. and Judy Jean Wertz. John is survived by his daughter, Amber “Nikki” Williams, a son, Justin James Wertz and wife Hatty, grandchildren Haley, Abby, Jarek, James, Savannah, Jaise, Reiley and Jack and siblings William B. Wertz Jr., Kevin Wertz Sr., Pamela Wertz and Shaun Wertz.
John retired as a sergeant from the State Correctional Institution in Chester in 2015. He had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle and playing bingo with his daughter. John was an avid Steelers fan but most importantly cherished spending time with his grandchildren. They loved playing games together, going on adventures around town and playing Pokemon Go together. One of John’s greatest joys was cooking meals for his family during the holidays.
A Celebration of Life service will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday December 16th at Bellwood Fire Hall located at 399 S First St Bellwood. Arrangements are by Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., located at 719 N Fourth Ave Altoona
