Italy insists on having the position of Vice President of the EU Commission.

Italy is pushing for a Vice-President with a significant portfolio in the new EU Commission to ensure stability in Europe following the recent parliamentary elections. Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani made this statement in an interview with a national newspaper. The talks have only just begun, with an EPP summit scheduled in Brussels on Monday to discuss the negotiations on the Commission Presidency. Tajani expressed his desire for a popular, liberal, and conservative majority in the EU Commission.

Regarding the possibility of former Italian prime minister and ECB chief Mario Draghi becoming the new EU Commission President, Tajani stated that Draghi is an expert but not a politician. It would require agreements between various European political families to elect the EU Commission President. The EPP, which emerged as the strongest group in the European Parliament during the recent elections, supports giving current Commission President Ursula von der Leyen a second term in Brussels. However, it remains uncertain whether she would secure enough votes if nominated by the EU heads of state and government.
