ALS patients unable to speak benefit from artificial intelligence

In Israel, where approximately 600 ALS patients reside and around 138 were diagnosed in 2023, the prevalence of artificial intelligence is making a significant impact on their lives. ALS, an incurable disease that causes patients to live anywhere from a few months to several years after diagnosis, has long been a source of despair for those affected.

When faced with this devastating news, ALS patients and their families often experience shock and chaos. To provide support during this difficult time, IsraAlS, an association dedicated to assisting ALS patients, offers a listening ear and aid to those in need. Efrat Karmi, CEO of IsraAlS emphasizes the importance of offering support to patients and their loved ones during this challenging period.

IsraAlS recently hosted its 19th year fundraising event, which recognized three leading Israeli researchers studying ALS. Notable figures such as Nobel laureate Prof. Aharon Chachanover and musician Danny Sanderson were present at the event. However, the most memorable moment came when Debbie Edmoni Zinner shared her story using unique AI technology.

Debbie utilized AI to create an avatar that spoke in her own likeness, enabling her to communicate with the audience despite the challenges posed by her condition. This innovative use of technology marked a significant milestone in Israel’s efforts to support ALS patients and improve their quality of life.
