Attack on Rafah: Start Date Still Undecided by media

Israel has not yet decided on a date for the attack, according to a report by Haaretz, which cited insider sources. The Prime Minister’s office has instructed the armed forces to draw up a plan to carry out an attack on Rafah, a Gaza border town.

One of the main challenges facing Israel is that it has not reached an agreement with Egypt regarding the fate of the tunnels running between Egypt and Gaza. Hamas is believed to have used these tunnels to smuggle weapons and other supplies into Gaza. As such, any declarations of intent by Israel to attack Rafah could increase pressure and prompt Hamas leaders to show more flexibility in negotiations between the two sides.

According to a press release from Netanyahu’s office, the Prime Minister has instructed the armed forces to prepare a plan to destroy four Hamas battalions in Rafah and evacuate civilians from the area. The attack should be completed by March 10, before Ramadan begins. Hamas has warned that an Israeli ground attack on Rafah could result in tens of thousands of casualties. International actors have expressed concern about the potential impact of such an attack on civilians, as there are hundreds of thousands living in the Rafah area and Israel has previously ordered people to evacuate to southern Gaza. According to data from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry, more than 28,000 people had already been killed by Israeli airstrikes and attacks as of Saturday in response to October’s assault by Hamas.
