Second round of snap presidential elections held in Iran

On Friday, July 5, Iran will hold its second round of early presidential elections following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash on May 19. In the first round on June 28, Masoud Pezeshkian and conservative Said Jalili emerged as the top candidates. While Pezeshkian received about 42% of the votes, Jalili received about 39%.

However, officially, the turnout in the first round was reported at 40%, which is the lowest in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran. There are doubts about the accuracy of these figures, with some suggesting that the real turnout could have been much lower. The conservative candidate has a better chance in the second round as voters who supported other conservative politicians in the first round have no alternative.

The voter turnout in the second round will play a crucial role in determining the outcome. While Iran’s president is formally the head of state, the country is effectively ruled by the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The outcome of these elections will have significant implications for Iran’s future direction.
