International Space Cooperation Advances as China, Latin America and Caribbean Meet in Wuhan

The Cooperation Forum Space Conference, which brought together representatives from China, Latin America, and the Caribbean, took place in Wuhan. During the conference, agreements were reached on collaborating on lunar and deep universe exploration projects, defending the central role of the United Nations Organization in outer space, and supporting the application of aerospace technologies. The Wuhan Declaration was adopted at the end of the forum and consists of seven points that aim to support member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), including Mexico.

The declaration establishes the forum as an information center for sharing solutions in science, technology, applications, education, and training. It also promotes high-quality debate on space-related topics and supports the application of satellite communications, navigation, and Earth observation technologies in various areas such as environmental protection, agriculture, forestry, disaster prevention, and mitigation with a focus on fighting climate change. Moreover it emphasizes promoting space cooperation between agencies and research institutes participating in consultations on international standards for outer space.

The countries involved agreed on the importance of defending the central role of the United Nations in outer space matters and complying with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals particularly in relation to space and climate change. This declaration builds on principles governing space activities established in 1967 and reflects mutual interest of China and Celac countries in peaceful uses of space technology.

China has already signed cooperation agreements with some countries within Celac bloc like Brazil Venezuela Bolivia during this forum Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized progress made in space cooperation with Latin American countries he also highlighted Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing’s participation stating that this event commemorates China’s Space Day launching its first satellite Dongfanghong-1 back in 1970 aimed to strengthen development strategies deepen scientific technological cooperation enhance talent exchanges
