Instagram is currently testing a new feature that provides users with access to a list of the most popular trending topics being discussed on the social network in the United States. This feature is available in both the main feed and search tab. According to Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, the social network is working on a feature that displays emerging trending topics similar to X trends (formerly Twitter). Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has announced that this feature is being tested with users in real-time in the United States.
The trending topics are displayed in a list on the search page in a section called ‘Today’s topics’. This list shows users the main topics that they are discussing in their Threads publications ordered by interactions, with the name of the topic and a featured post. The trends are also displayed within the main feed, encapsulated in a ‘Today’s Topics’ section where users can slide from one trending topic to another.
Meta’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems determine which trends will be displayed based on people’s posts and interactions. Content specialists will review these selected trends to ensure they are not duplicated or confusing. Despite Meta’s recent announcement to limit recommended political content on Instagram and Threads, political topics may still be selected as trends.
Currently, this feature is being tested with users in the United States only. However, Mark Zuckerberg has stated that once it has been optimized it will be implemented worldwide in more countries and languages
