Innovation Award: Release System Recognized for Technological Advancements

Koppert has won the first prize in the international Fruit Logistica Innovation Award Technology for its release system for ‘Mirica’, a biological solution. The award was presented in Berlin on 9 February and focuses on innovations in the entire fruit and vegetable supply chain.

Koppert’s innovation is replacing plastic product packaging with corrugated cardboard, which forms a “natural habitat” for Mirical beneficial bugs. According to Koppert, the corrugations enable bugs to hide and better distribute themselves during transportation, protecting them from harm and ensuring they arrive at their destination in optimal condition. In addition, the packaging reduces clumping while improving bug distribution in the crop, which benefits performance and whitefly control. The cardboard strips are also fully compostable, labor-saving, more accurately doseable, and easy to locate.

Mirical is a generalist pest predator that prefers greenhouse whitefly, tobacco whitefly, eggs, caterpillars of the tomato leaf miner moth, and other moths. They also feed on two-spotted spider mites, aphids , and leaf miner larvae. The product was launched in France last year.
