Haywood Community College’s Construction Technology students have recently partnered with the Waynesville Housing Authority to provide additional storage space to homes in the Ninevah housing community. The Waynesville Housing Authority, which oversees 100 residential units across five locations in town, is committed to addressing the housing needs of the local community through collaborative projects like this one.
Students in the Construction Technology program were tasked with preparing the foundations for the storage sheds by laying out and leveling blocks and framing floor systems with plywood decking. These practical skills align with the curriculum of their course, which emphasizes residential framing. The Waynesville Housing Authority plans to install pre-manufactured sheds on these sites at a later date.
This partnership provides students with an opportunity to apply their skills in real-world scenarios. As a member of the Construction Skills & Technology Advisory Board, Waynesville Housing Authority Director John Bryson has been actively involved in working with HCC’s construction program on various projects. He noted that this collaboration is a testament to their commitment to providing quality and affordable housing to individuals in Haywood County and beyond.
Classes in the Construction Skills & Technology program are offered year-round, covering topics such as basic construction skills, HVACR, construction technology, and plumbing. Those interested in learning more about the Waynesville Housing Authority can visit their website at waynesvillehousing.org, while information about HCC’s Construction classes can be found at haywood.edu/continuing-education/construction.
