As part of its efforts to reduce waste and promote a greener environment, the city of Grand Rapids has implemented a new system that utilizes cameras, GPS, and computers to improve the sorting of recyclable materials. Three of the city’s recycling trucks will be equipped with specialized equipment during a six-month trial period to actively scan and identify items that cannot be recycled at the county facility.
This initiative is aimed at educating and improving the recycling process for everyone in the community. By increasing the amount of material that can be reused, it benefits residents as well as the community as a whole. The program is funded by a grant from Michigan EGLE and the Recycling Partnership with the goal of increasing the state’s recycling rate to 30% by 2025.
Grand Rapids Public Works Director John Gorney stated that this new technology is part of their efforts to enhance recycling practices and promote a greener environment. Through innovative tools, they aim to optimize the recycling process and reduce waste in the community. Residents are encouraged to participate in this program and learn more about proper recycling methods.
