Google is making significant changes to its Terms of Service on May 22 to provide users with greater clarity regarding ownership of original content created by artificial intelligence (AI) and user abuse. The update aims to inform users about what they can expect from the technology company and its users when using digital services and products.
One of the key updates involves clarifying ownership of content generated by generative AI. Google specifies in the ‘your content’ section that it will not claim ownership of original content produced by its services, including generative AI. It also outlines the responsibilities of each party in the event of a dispute for violating the terms of use. Google states that it can suspend or terminate access as well as pursue other remedies as per applicable law. Users are also given the opportunity to describe any disagreements and resolve them in case of disputes with the company.
Additionally, Google has added a section addressing abuse by users of its services. To address issues where “a small number of people” have not followed the rules, Google now includes more examples and details about inappropriate use and interference with services that are not allowed. This update aims to provide greater clarity and transparency for users using Google’s services and products.
Google’s update does not change how its services are used, but it provides a clearer understanding of what users can expect when using digital services and products offered by the company.
Google has started notifying users via email about these changes, giving them ample time to review the updated Terms of Service before May 22.
