Google has announced that its smallest large language model (LLM) called Gemini Nano will be available on the standard version of the Pixel 8 smartphone family, starting in June. The optimized model is designed to run generative AI directly on the device, similar to the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 series.
The LLM was previously stated to not reach the Pixel 8 due to hardware limitations. However, Google’s vice president of devices and software services, Seang Chau, has now confirmed that the LLM adapted for smartphones will indeed reach the Pixel 8, with an expected release in June alongside new functionalities with Android 14 QPR3.
Google also announced new features such as ‘Summary’ in the recorder tool and Gboard Smart Reply that will be available on the Pixel 8 in a developer preview. This announcement was made on the Made by Google Podcast, indicating that these tools will be coming in the next few months.
