Global Dengue Fever Outbreaks: Why They Happen, How to Prevent Them, and What Treatment Options Exist

In 2023, the world saw a surge in dengue fever cases, with over 5 million reported globally and more than 5,000 deaths. This alarming statistic brought attention to the mosquito-transmitted disease and prompted health officials to closely monitor its progress.

As the resurgence of dengue fever outbreaks in 2024 continues to raise questions, Dr. Raman Velayudhan shared his insights on the topic during a recent interview with Vismita Gupta-Smith on the WHO Science in 5 show. According to the World Health Organization, dengue has become endemic in many countries in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. In the United States, states like Florida and Puerto Rico have reported cases of both locally acquired and travel-related dengue in 2024.

While an approved dengue vaccine is available in the U.S., access to it may require pre-admission testing. As healthcare professionals and the public continue their fight against dengue, staying informed and taking necessary precautions are crucial to prevent its potentially life-threatening spread.

The resurgence of dengue fever outbreaks in new areas has raised concerns about why it is appearing there and what can be done to prevent it. The World Health Organization has identified several factors that contribute to the spread of dengue fever, including climate change, urbanization, and international travel.

To prevent further outbreaks of this potentially life-threatening disease, it is essential for healthcare professionals and individuals take necessary precautions such as avoiding standing water where mosquitoes breed and using insect repellents when outdoors.

In addition to prevention measures, treatment options are also available for those who contract dengue fever. While there is no specific cure for dengue fever, symptoms can be managed with rest, hydration, pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen
