Latvia recognized as a leader in promoting women in science and technology within the EU

The proportion of women working as scientists and engineers varies greatly depending on the sector. In the service sector, 46% of these professionals are women, while in manufacturing, only 22% are.

Among EU Member States, Latvia stands out as a leader in terms of the number of women employed in science and technology fields. This includes occupations like researchers, technicians, and associated professionals who work together to generate, advance, and apply scientific and technological knowledge.

In 2022, Lithuania had the highest shares of women working in science and technology occupations among all EU countries. This was closely followed by the French region of Corse and Latvia. On the other hand, regions with smaller proportions of women working in these fields were found in Italy’s Nord-Ovest region, Malta, and Italy’s Sud region.

This data was released to coincide with International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th.
