The G-7 nations have pledged their support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, which threatens to reignite the Ukrainian-Crimean front. Russia has escalated the situation by promising to provide long-range weapons to its adversaries in the West. During the recent G-7 meeting, it was clear that the US-led EU was firmly behind Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his fight against Russia.
In response to this support, France is planning to deploy troops and the UK will supply Storm Shadow missiles with a range of 300 km. The US will provide High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to target Russian forces in Crimea as part of a USD 50 billion aid package from the US-led EU and USD 225 million in approved military hardware.
During the G-7 summit in Apulia, President Zelensky secured support from major western powers including India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Zelensky to discuss the situation in Ukraine and also had a meeting with US President Joe Biden where they talked about China’s challenge in the Indo-Pacific region.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia may intensify once again as France, UK and US step up their military hardware support for Ukraine. They plan to use standoff long-range cruise missiles and over-the-horizon weaponry to target Russian logistics bases in Crimea. In response, Russian President Putin has stated that he will supply weapons to nations and groups opposed to the US-led coalition, increasing global instability with the possibility of nuclear weapons being used if Russian sovereignty is threatened.
