The Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, has assured that the State will do everything in its power to compensate the victims of the shipwreck that occurred in Steccato di Cutro last February 26th. He emphasized that this is an exceptional situation and one that is being handled through legal proceedings. However, he stated that the State will not turn a blind eye to the tragedy and will make every effort to help those affected by it.

In contrast to what came out during the trial against three smugglers of the shipwrecked gulet, it was revealed that the Guarantee fund for road victims had opposed being sued as civilly liable in court. The Fund had argued that the wrecked vessel had not been used for pleasure or public transport and therefore should not be subject to insurance laws that also regulate intervention by the guarantee fund for road victims. The court reserved its decision on this request for exclusion. However, it was represented by lawyer Giulia Bongiorno, who is a senator from the League party.

Piantedosi’s statement served as a commitment from the State to provide support and compensation to those affected by the tragic disaster.
