Amazon to discontinue using ‘Just Walk Out’ technology at grocery stores

Amazon has decided to replace its “Just Walk Out” self-service technology at Amazon Fresh stores in the United States with the “Amazon Dash Cart.” The new technology provides a similar checkout-free experience for customers, allowing them to scan items before placing them in the cart and pay automatically without waiting in line.

The “Just Walk Out” technology had previously allowed customers to grab items and leave without waiting in a checkout line by using sensors and cameras to track their selections. However, customers expressed a desire for features like finding nearby products, viewing their receipt, and knowing how much they saved while shopping, leading to the introduction of the Amazon Dash Cart.

Jessica Martin, an Amazon spokesperson, stated that the company has been redesigning its Amazon Fresh stores to enhance the overall shopping experience and offer more convenience. Customers expressed a desire for features like finding nearby products, viewing their receipt, and knowing how much they saved while shopping.

While Amazon is removing the “Just Walk Out” technology from Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S., it will continue to be available at Amazon Go stores and smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K. The first cashier-less Amazon grocery store outside the U.S. was opened in London in 2021.
