The Golf, a beloved car model from Volkswagen, is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Friday. Since its first models were produced in 1974, over 37 million units have been sold worldwide. The Golf has become an iconic symbol of the German car company and continues to be popular today.
Volkswagen began production of the Golf on March 29, 1974, as a replacement for the Beetle. Over the years, the Golf has undergone many transformations and updates, with eight generations being introduced so far. The latest generation, the Golf 8, was presented in 2019 and features a plug-in hybrid option with a fully electric range of 100 kilometers. It also includes voice control and an automated conversation partner based on artificial intelligence.
The Golf remains one of the best-selling Volkswagen models in Germany, with 81,000 cars sold in 2023 according to Statista. In addition to being popular in Germany, the Golf is also manufactured in other countries including Wolfsburg, where it all began. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, a special exhibition will open in Wolfsburg to showcase the fifty years of the Golf’s existence.
