Oregon State Representative Lisa Reynolds emphasized the need for more “embodied experiences versus virtual ones” in the classroom during a recent virtual forum on the impact of technology on students, staff, teachers, and caregivers. Reynolds called for a rule that would limit the use of cell phones and social media in schools to prevent negative effects such as depression, loneliness, isolation, and distraction.
During the forum, state representatives hinted at removing cell phones from classrooms altogether to address these concerns. The idea of holding tech giants accountable was also discussed, with a federal lawsuit being filed against META, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, for allegedly designing platforms to addict children and teenagers.
Representative Reynolds mentioned that there are other ways to communicate with children during school hours if emergencies arise. Despite some concerns from parents about needing to reach their children during school hours, Reynolds emphasized the importance of creating a safe learning environment for all students involved.
The U.S. Surgeon General has even suggested adding a tobacco-style warning on social media platforms to raise awareness about their potential negative effects on young people’s mental health. Overall, the consensus among representatives is that policy regarding the use of technology in schools needs to be implemented at the district or state level to ensure a safe and effective learning environment for all students involved.
