Journeying from Bakersfield to a Serene Setting to Study Science and Medicine

Anmol Kaur, a San Joaquin Valley native from Bakersfield, is set to embark on her journey in the worlds of science and medicine as a first-year student at UC Merced. Kaur, who excelled academically with a 4.5 GPA and was a participant in the Project Lead the Way biomedical science program, has been accepted into the second SJV PRIME+ medical education cohort.

Raised in Bakersfield and a graduate of Stockdale High School, Kaur co-founded W.I.S.E. (Women in STEM Education), a nonprofit aimed at inspiring and educating young girls about STEM careers through community initiatives. With a quiet and peaceful location that feels like home in the Central Valley, UC Merced beckoned Kaur to continue her educational journey. Her acceptance into the SJV PRIME+ BS/MD pathway played a significant role in her decision to attend the university.

As a biological sciences major, Kaur aspires to further her experiences and passion in the fields of science and medicine. Her goal is to prepare for medical school with the support of her community while also volunteering locally, forming new connections, and creating lasting memories. When it comes to personal preferences, Kaur enjoys all kinds of fruits, considers herself a night owl, and dreams of exploring Italy’s scenic towns for a three-day weekend getaway. Excited for the opportunities ahead, she looks forward to creating new experiences, developing relationships
