Attacks on French government spokesman during election campaign

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal condemned an attack on government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot and members of her election campaign team in Paris. On July 4, the group was attacked while putting up election posters in the Meudon area.

According to media reports, Ms. Thevenot, MP Virginie Lanlo, and two political activists were surrounded and attacked by a group of about 20 people while hanging posters in the Hauts-de-Seine electoral district. Local police intervened promptly, and four suspects, including three minors, were arrested on charges of attacking public officials with a weapon.

Ms. Thevenot expressed frustration over racist comments directed at her family, saying that the rise of the far-right had made her a target. The motive of the group of suspects in the attack has not been announced by French authorities yet.
