Former Bolivian President Evo Morales Threatens ‘Convulsion’ if Disqualified from 2025 Presidential Race

Evo Morales, the former president of Bolivia, has warned that there will be a “convulsion” in the country if his presidential candidacy for the 2025 elections is disqualified. Despite both him and current President Luis Arce belonging to the same party, Morales blames Arce’s government for any potential unrest.

In an interview with EFE agency, Morales stated that if he is disqualified from running for president again, there will be consequences and any resulting turmoil would be the responsibility of the government. He believes that mass action is the only way to win this struggle and has heard that various sectors anticipate difficulties if his candidacy is annulled.

The possibility of disqualifying his candidacy arose after a ruling by Bolivia’s Constitutional Court last year, which said that indefinite reelection is not a human right and can only be applied once, continuously or discontinuously. While Morales maintains that he is legally and constitutionally enabled to be a candidate, as confirmed by consultations with national and international experts, others have questioned whether it’s possible for him to run again.

Tensions within Morales’ party, Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), are evident at its anniversary event this year. The ‘arcista’ bloc supporting President Arce celebrated in La Paz while the ‘evista’ wing aligned with Morales held an event in Yapacaní. Last year, during MAS’s anniversary event tensions were high with Morales questioning Arce’s achievements while advocating for pluralism of ideas within MAS.

Morales has criticized Arce administration for not fulfilling mandates to hold coup plotters accountable following the 2019 crisis that led to Morales resignation and exile. He sees this as deviation from MAS anti-imperialist tradition and accuses government of offering bribes to officials to distance themselves from MAS. This rift within MAS extends beyond legality of congress which re-elected Morales as sole candidate for 2025 elections; pro-government sectors call for new congress while others maintain it was legal process.
