Finland Leads the Way in Hydrogen Economy with National Transmission Network Launch

Finland is set to become a leading player in the hydrogen market with the launch of its national transmission network. Gasgrid, the gas transmission network company, has unveiled a preliminary plan for Finland’s hydrogen backbone network, aimed at developing an open hydrogen market by the 2030s. The initial phase of the hydrogen transmission network will focus on building infrastructure primarily in the coastal area of Finland, where a large number of wind power projects are located and a significant portion of carbon dioxide emissions come from.

The decision to prioritize the coastal area was influenced by market research conducted by Gasgrid in 2023. Plans for expanding the hydrogen transmission network in future include areas in eastern, central, and northern Finland where new wind or solar power production can be developed. Gasgrid is set to begin mapping out concrete route alternatives for the network starting in spring 2024 and gather feedback from companies and project developers involved in advancing the hydrogen economy. There is a collective effort to support the development of the hydrogen infrastructure and foster a thriving hydrogen market in Finland.
