FIFA has announced a sponsorship deal with Saudi Arabia’s state oil company, Aramco, which will see the kingdom become a key partner of the international soccer governing body. The agreement, which extends through 2027, includes major FIFA tournaments such as the 2026 men’s World Cup and the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is believed to be one of FIFA’s most lucrative agreements in recent years. It may also include Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the upcoming 32-team Club World Cup scheduled for next year.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has had a close relationship with Saudi Arabia and its Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for several years now. The partnership was heavily favored by Saudi Arabia during the bidding process for the 2034 men’s World Cup last October, when it emerged as the sole candidate after other Asian and Oceanic federations were excluded from participating.
In addition to its sponsorship deal with FIFA, Saudi Arabia has also been heavily involved in promoting soccer in the region through its own domestic leagues and tournaments. However, it did not participate as a sponsor in Australia and New Zealand during their hosting of the 2023 Women’s World Cup due to objections from local organizers.
