Farewell to Iconic Retailer: Bob’s Stores Shuts Down Across the Northeast

In 2024, Bob’s Stores, a discount clothing and shoe retailer with locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts, announced its decision to liquidate all of its stores due to a “liquidity crisis.” The company’s president, Dave Barton, expressed regret over the financial position that led to the decision to close the stores. Bob’s Stores has been a staple in local communities for nearly 70 years and has had a significant impact on customers’ lives.

The list of Bob’s Stores closing includes locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Store locations in different states are mentioned, with details on the store address for each location provided for customers to know which stores will be closing.

Bob’s Stores is currently holding liquidation sales at all its remaining locations. Discounts ranging from 30% to 70% off regular retail prices are available on clothing and shoes. Customers can also purchase store fixtures, furniture, and equipment at discounted prices during this time. The company will continue to accept gift cards and exchanges until July 14th.

Bob’s Stores was originally established by founder Bob Lapidus as “Bob’s Surplus” in Middletown, Connecticut in 1954. Over the years, ownership changes have occurred; it was acquired by TJX Companies in 2003 before being sold to private equity firms in 2008. The closure of retail stores is becoming more common across the country as companies struggle with bankruptcies and inflation affecting consumer shopping habits.
